Who is Rachael? On July 31, 1986 in Phoenix, Arizona Rachael Garrett was born to James Garrett and Patricia Renee Robinson. Rachael spent the majority of her youth in Oakland, California where she was raised by her mother. However, at the young age of 10 Rachael’s life was forever changed by her mother’s death. Following this life altering tragedy, she moved to Detroit, Michigan to live with her father and step-mother (a step-mother that cares for Rachael as though she were her own). With her parents heavily involved in ministry and being Pastors, Rachael was raised in the Church. During her sophomore year of high school, Rachael developed a strong passion for the piano and began taking courses through an accredited class.
Upon graduating from (Denby High School) Rachael embarked on a new journey, college. Rachael is a graduate from Central State University, with a BA degree in Music Performance with a concentration in Piano with a G.P.A of 3.01. During her collegiate years Rachael has been very involved with her University. She has been a member of the Central State University Grammy Nominated Chorus where she was given the opportunity to travel throughout Italy in 2007 during the Choir’s annual spring tour. She became a member of Mu Phi Epsilon International Professional Music Fraternity Inc in spring of 2005 and during the 2007-2008 school year she was the chapter president of her organization. She currently works as a private piano teacher for the Music Mentors program on Central State’s campus as well as for Notes Worthy Music Store in Xenia, Ohio.
Rachael keeps herself busy outside of school by being heavily involved with her current church; Church of Judah Family Worship Center in Xenia, Ohio with Pastors Glendon and Tina Jones. Here she sings on the Praise and Worship team, is the assistant to Pastor Tina Jones of the Women’s Ministry, and involved with the Dance Ministry. She served a team memeber for the Ms. Virtuous Pageant under the Visionary Pastor Tina Jones and a pianist at Fellowship for Christ Church in Detroit, Michigan.
Aside from her many activities, Rachael has developed a talent for play writing. Currently she is writing the play “It C.A.M.E to Pass…Come Against the Mask Experience” which is a word from the Lord concerning hurt people who choose the church as a hospital or place of refuge but still leave hurt and unchanged. This play does not avoid the issues of the Church, but actually faces and deals with them. Her motivation for writing this play is to create tangible evidence to prove that is it possible to move forward pass the past, by removing the mask and allowing our faces to be visible to the world. To wear a mask means to hide something that is meant to be visible or feign to be what you are not. While this play will be real to many, it is very much a piece of Rachael’s personal testimony. Many of the stories dealing with rejection, shame, feeling like a failure, hurts from various relationships and the past can be found throughout Rachael’s life. To Rachael, writing the play is displaying herself before the world in hopes that others will be strengthened and encouraged to do the same.
As Rachael prepares herself to embark on another journey, she keeps her aspirations and dreams of performing and ministering overseas close to her heart. She will continue her education at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in Music Education and Business Administration where her writing will continue to be cultivated.
